Tactile Language

ANNABEL HOOD
JEWELLERY + SILVERSMITHING- ECA ‘18

Annabel’s work acts as a catalyst to discuss visual exclusion and ‘disability’, facilitated by the use of braille and other coded languages, which she distorts onto tactile surface designs to highlight issues surrounding accessibility.

The use of braille prompts the understanding of how touch can enable us to understand what we see, however, when handled, the distorted messages on the vessels highlight the debate of what accessible language is: whether haptics can be a means of communication or on the contrary, a form of exclusion.
