Gender Neutral Toys
PRODUCT DESIGN- ECA '18
Inspired by the history of women wearing trousers, Siyuan's unisex toys aim to neutralise society's preconceived notions in a similar fashion.
"Women wearing trousers in the 1950s was still a thing of novelty, but in the early 60s, trousers in the forms of leisure styles became acceptable for American women, especially those who were young. In the 70s, this acceptance spread to the workplace, schools, and even formal occasions. This process turned trousers from masculine to gender neutral, which I believe can also happen with toys".
Concentrating on the pink construction hat and blue hoover, we almost missed the toys' only clothing, skirts, which felt right at home amongst the different options. Seemingly simple, Siyuan's work stands out for many reasons: good craftsmanship, a tasteful use of colours, cutesie shapes and modularity would all encourage children and adults to interact with and enjoy these characters, without thinking twice about their deeper message.
