HS2 subbies have to sign up for diversity and inclusion training

All HS2 subcontractors and suppliers will be expected to “embed Diversity and Inclusion best practice across their business processes.”

Leaders of the £106bn project have launched HS2 Marketplace which allows suppliers of all sizes access diversity training and resources.

The HS2 Marketplace platform is designed and backed by diversity and inclusion consultant the Clear Company who have awarded HS2 their Clear Assured Platinum Standard accreditation.

More than 2,300 businesses have already won work on HS2 and thousands more are expected to join them as £25bn worth of contract opportunities flow out into the wider supply chain over the coming years.

Bidders will be expected to use the Marketplace platform to access training and resources to support them in meeting and evaluating progress against key performance indicators set by HS2.

The key performance indicators are:

Training for all colleagues on Diversity and Inclusion specifically, legal obligations, inclusive job design, inclusive talent sourcing, inclusive shortlisting, the inclusive interview and creating an evidence-based audit trailEffective monitoring of Diversity and Inclusion at each stage of the recruitment cycleA reasonable adjustments programme for colleagues and candidates that is proactive, timely and effectiveEvidence of attracting a diverse candidate pool from both traditional and non-traditional recruitment channelsEvidence of creating an inclusive working environment for colleagues including flexible working, colleague networks and objective performance managementThe use of accessible technology for application and assessment

An HS2 spokesperson said: “HS2 expects all its suppliers to act in a manner which is consistent with the HS2 Values. Each Tier 1 contractor has specific contractual requirements in relation to equality, diversity and inclusion which flow down to the sub-contractors that they work with.”

HS2’s seven construction partners have already introduced a number of practical measures to champion diversity, inclusion and employee wellbeing across their worksites.

Mace Dragados has implemented a new ‘Make it Stick’ campaign, which ensures that LGBT + trained allies are easily identifiable on site through high visibility stickers worn on their hard hats.

Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial Construction and BAM Nuttall (EKFB) has developed a bespoke programme of men’s and women’s health workshops, as well as creating wellbeing and prayer room spaces at its construction sites while the Skanska Costain STRABAG joint venture (SCS) is upgrading its employee app to enable staff to capture, track and monitor EDI best practice.

Mark Lomas, Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) at HS2 said: “With two decades of construction work ahead of us HS2 is naturally placed to be a real driver for change, and we’ll achieve this by ensuring that every company engaged in delivering Britain’s new railway plays their part in setting a new EDI standard.

“HS2 Marketplace enables our suppliers to be confident that their practices and processes, from recruitment through to the workplace environment, are truly inclusive and follow the best practice standards we expect.”

HS2 said its supply chain is already performing well, with the number of disabled, Black and Ethnically Diverse, and female workers exceeding industry averages.

Kate Headley, Director of the Clear Company said: “Once again HS2 have demonstrated ground-breaking progress and innovation with the launch of the Marketplace platform.

“This is a significant step forward in creating a truly inclusive engineering sector and the constructive, supportive approach will enable HS2 suppliers to improve access to long term career opportunities, for all people, right across the sector.”

Suspended jail sentence for scaffold boss after forklift death

The managing director of a scaffolding company has been been given a suspended prison sentence after an employee died when he was struck from behind by a forklift truck.

Leicester Magistrate’s Court heard how on 20 June 2016, Shaun Flynn had just finished loading a lorry in the yard of Boss Scaffolding (Northampton) Limited when he was struck from behind by the raised forks of a moving forklift truck. He subsequently died from his injuries.

An HSE investigation found that Boss Scaffolding director Leon Gill and an employee of the company failed to take reasonable care for the health and safety of others who might be affected by the poor management of risks arising from the use of a counterbalance forklift truck in a state of disrepair.

Company director Gill of Northampton pleaded guilty to safety breaches and was sentenced to 10 weeks imprisonment suspended for eighteen months and ordered to pay a £7,000 fine and £45,000 costs.

Speaking after the hearing, HSE inspector Jenna McDade said: “This case highlights the importance of regular pro-active maintenance and inspection of work equipment, to ensure equipment does not deteriorate to the extent that it puts people at risk. Sadly the tragic death of Mr Flynn could have been prevented.

“Companies and individuals should be aware that HSE will not hesitate to take appropriate enforcement action against those that fall below the required standards.”

Chancellor to detail £7bn spending pledge for local transport

Chancellor Rishi Sunak is planning to detail plans in the Autumn spending review on Wednesday to pump £7bn in local transport improvements in Midlands and Northern cities.

The pledge will amount to around £1.5bn or 20% of actual extra new cash to supplement previous spending commitments on infrastructure in the regions over the next five years.

It will be directed at areas outside of London to level up transport with new train and station upgrades and the expansion of trams, with £1.2bn also allocated to improve bus services.

Its forms part of a £26bn raft of spending commitments trialed over the weekend ahead of the Autumn spending review.

Local transport infrastructure commitments will see West Yorkshire given £830m while South Yorkshire receives £570m.

Around £1.05bn will be freshly committed in the West Midlands, £710m for the Liverpool City Region, £310m in Tees Valley and £540m to the West of England.

Rishi Sunak confirmed previously the Government had announced £4.2bn in allocation for regional transport, adding the Government would now top that up with £1.5bn while giving out the allocation for where the cash will go within the oveall local transport infrastructure cash envelope

“Greate cities need great transport and that is why we’re investing billions to improve connections in our city regions as we level up opportunities across the country.

“This transport revolution will help redress that imbalance as we modernise our local transport networks so they are fit for our great cities and those people who live and work in them,” he said in briefing mover the weekend.

Murphy trials AI warning cameras at site danger zones

Murphy & Sons is testing the latest advances in artificial intelligence site cameras to increase worker safety on its sites.

The camera warning system monitors key exclusion zones and restricted plant and people zones on sites sounding an alarm if workers intrude on the danger zone.

This new technology can also be used to monitor for other potential health and safety issues such as incorrect PPE usage and trip hazards.

The sensors have analytical and machine learning capabilities that can send valuable metadata, which can be analysed alongside data from a range of sources, including traditional accident, incident and reporting tools, weather data to anticipate incidents and manage health and safety across multiple construction sites.

Matthew Barney, senior procurement manager at Murphy said: “This technology has the potential to play a really critical role in helping us to reduce site safety incidents and protect our colleagues.

“The ability to identify risks on site and move quickly in real time to warn of the danger is vital to helping deliver a safe environment for all our employees.

“By combining traditional health and safety methods and best practice with new technologies such as this, we will continue to deliver on our commitment to place health and safety and the very heart of our wider business.”

Known as the AiMac, the system has been developed by Murphy Technical Services and security and control systems specialist IMAC.
